Research Goal
My primary goal is to synthesize the most active triterpene of the species Ganoderma lucidum or Reishi.
Description of Your Research
I am currently working on a synthesis of the most active triterpene from the fungus Ganoderma lucidum or Reishi. The fungal extracts possess a myriad of attributes of value. This synthesis is done through a multitude of steps which involves the modification of functional groups starting with the most cost efficient triterpene: Lanosterol.
Examples Of How My Research Is Integrated Into My GK-12 Experience
We are going to incorporate my research into the AP chemistry class by teaching them some of the basics of Organic Chemistry. I will be introducing the students every two weeks to some important aspects of the subject. We will tie in any labs, which include chromatography (TLC, flash for purification, and possibly GC) to teach them how to evaluate what it is that they have made. I will eventually build them up to a project that includes an Organic Synthesis; hopefully with an emphasis on 'Green Chemistry.'
Currently, My GK-12 Classroom Is Investigating
